General Responsibilities: 
  • Provide competent, compassionate, and complete medical treatment to the crew of the vessel in an industrial setting
  • Evaluate, stabilize, and treat all reported medical illnesses and injuries following standing protocols and using online medical control as needed (satellite phone, telemedicine kit).
  • Respond to any, and all medical emergencies wherever they may occur onboard the ship
  • Competently consult with Telemedicine and Clinical Providers ashore, to provide and coordinate care for injured or ill crew members
  • Provide Medical Support in remote areas with minimal direct supervision including IV Therapy, suturing, and/or other treatment as necessary
  • Administer over the counter medicines and prescribed medications at the direction of shoreside medical control, as needed
  • Commit to seasonal at sea deployments with limited rotations (season length and time at sea can change with little to no notice).
  • Timely and accurately complete and send all patient care reports for illness and injuries to the corporate claims representative
  • Act as the medical liaison between the patient, vessel officers, and corporate personnel regarding all shipboard medical problems
  • Maintain inventories and submit orders to assure an adequate supply of consumable medicines and treatment supplies
  • Maintain a clean, sanitary, hygienic, and well-organized work environment consistent with professional medical practice
  • Collect samples and operate Point of Care Testing for Influenza, COVID-19, Strep, etc.
  • Work assigned 12-hour shift as agreed upon with crew purser to maintain 24/7 medical coverage
  • Proactively support individual and crew wellness
  • Maintain daily logs, patient records, and archives, in accordance with HIPPA and VIKAND policy
Additional Responsibilities
  • Performs other similar or related duties as requested or assigned
  • May assist in loading and unloading operations at the start and end of all trips


Qualifications

Certificates, License & Registrations
  • State registered paramedic license in good standing
  • Valid NREMT-P certification
  • Valid PHTLS - Prehospital Trauma Life Support (or ATLS or ITLS or TCCC or TECC)
  • Valid ACLS & BLS Certifications (American Heart Association)

Experience
  • Minimum of five years of experience
  • Trauma experience
  • Suturing training and preferably experience
  • Remote Medical Experience preferred and/or Military Credentials, such as US Navy Independent Duty Corpsman (NEC 8425), and Special Forces Medic (18D)
  • A second language (i.e. Spanish, Vietnamese, Somali, Arabic, Samoan, French, Polish, Russian and Norwegian) is beneficial
  • Knowledge of email, spreadsheet software, word processing software and presentation software

            Physical Demands

            While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; have full use of legs, arms and hands. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must be able to climb or descend one or more set of steep stairs or vertical ladders both inside and/or outside in all weather conditions. The employee must regularly lift and /or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move 50-200 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision and depth perception. May be required to distinguish shades of color to identify abnormalities and/or problems.

            Must be capable of boarding and departing (exiting) a vessel without assistance by moving up or climbing a gangplank, the stern ramp of a vessel and/or a vertical ladder. Must be capable of boarding/departing the vessel by being lifted in a crane or manlift. May also enter and exit a skiff from a dock, plane, or a boat unassisted. Must meet at designated locations to receive instructions and place on a life jacket and an immersion suit without assistance in one minute or less. Must also move quickly without assistance to any designated life raft station.

            Work Environment

            While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and moving mechanical parts. The employee is frequently exposed to extreme cold. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; outside weather conditions; risk of electrical shock and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud and there is often a strong smell of fish.
