8 Ways to Practice Self Care at Sea

By Reyna Bagsic, Shipboard Nurse

Self-care has been clinically proven to reduce anxiety, depression, stress, and increase well-being. It also plays an important role in building strong relationships with our fellow crew members, guests, and colleagues. Here are eight ways we prioritise self-care onboard.

1. Explore Different Destinations

Our medical team ensures that each member gets to enjoy shore excursions during port visits. By coordinating schedules and planning effectively, we strike a balance between work and personal adventures and the chance to “sea the sights”.

2. Stay Healthy and Fit in the Gym

Staying healthy and fit is a cornerstone of self-care. Following fitness and dietary advice, we not only shed stress and strengthen our physique but also release those feel-good neurotransmitters and endorphins.

3. Take Part in the White Night Party

The White Night Party, a highly anticipated event for both guests and officers, is a time to relax and let loose. As officers, we serve and entertain guests, while indulging in the delicious food and enjoying the music and dancing.

4. Savour Coffee Breaks

Morning and afternoon coffee breaks have become a cherished tradition for our team. These moments not only reduce stress but also strengthen our friendships. Research suggests that caffeine can help relieve depressive symptoms, adding to our daily dose of well-being.

5. Enjoy Quiet Time in the Morning

Before diving into our daily tasks, we dedicate time to quiet reflection.Whether it's through meditation, deep breathing, or simply enjoying the serene open decks, this practice prepares us for the challenges ahead.

6. Communicate via WhatsApp

Cruise lines offer a lifeline to our loved ones through free access to WhatsApp. This communication app helps us share our feelings and stay connected with family and friends. It's an essential part of our self-care routine.

7. Invest in Personal Development

My colleagues inspire me by dedicating their free time to studying. Juggling work and education are a testament to their self-determination and commitment to growth, success, and personal development.

8. Sign Up for Crew Tours

Take advantage of these free or discounted tours to explore and create lasting memories. Be sure to bring your camera to capture these experiences away from work.

For seafarers, self-care isn't a luxury; it's an essential part of working on ships. By nurturing our physical and emotional health, we create a harmonious onboard environment that benefits everyone. Self-care is a lifestyle, and we've embraced it as a way of life on the high seas.
