In this edition of Pulse, meet Lauren Talbot, Director, Cruise Medical Services.
Describe your position and role at VIKAND
As Director of Cruise Medical Services, I oversee both the Case Management Department and the Medical Screening Team. The Screening Team manages pre-travel health assessments for guests on remote and expedition voyages as well as medical clearances for crew members before they join. Our Case Management Team provides post-travel support if a guest or crew member becomes ill or injured, ensuring they receive the care they need and when required, coordinating safe medical repatriation.
How long have you been in the maritime industry and at VIKAND, and what other roles have you held?
I joined VIKAND in November 2021 during the COVID-19 pandemic, initially supporting senior management with administrative duties. Soon after, I established the Case Management Department where I progressed from Case Coordinator to Manager. In March 2024 I was promoted to Director of Cruise Medical Services, expanding my responsibilities to include the Medical Screening Team.
Name a highlight of your career and a contribution to the maritime or healthcare industry of which you are proud
I am passionate about analysing data and trends in our field. A highlight for me was having one of my articles published in Seatrade Cruise Review in June last year where I explored diagnostic trends and key statistics related to crew medical emergencies.
What do you believe is the most significant advancement in the maritime or healthcare industry, specifically in your area of expertise?
Artificial intelligence is one of the most exciting advancements, and VIKAND is already embracing it across various solutions. Used responsibly, AI can streamline processes, strengthen communication and elevate service delivery. I look forward to further integrating AI within Cruise Medical Services to enhance the support we provide to our partners, guests and crew.
Who do you believe has made a significant impact in your part of the industry? Please describe how
My team of case managers inspires me daily. Their dedication, compassion and professionalism set them apart as true industry changemakers. The level of care they demonstrate resonates across time zones and phone lines, leaving a lasting impression on every guest and crew member they support.
What is the biggest challenge in your role and how do you address it?
One of the biggest challenges is when partners do not fully understand the scope and value of Cruise Medical Services. The best way to overcome this is through early engagement, demonstrating how we can support them from the outset. That way, when a situation arises, we are already integrated and able to provide seamless assistance without delays.
How vital is it to receive support from organisations such as VIKAND?
VIKAND’s medical solutions act as a trusted guiding hand in the cruise industry, helping partners navigate challenges with confidence.
What advice would you give to anyone considering a career in shipping?
The maritime industry is unpredictable with ever-changing schedules, regulations and market demands. Success comes to those who can problem-solve quickly and remain calm under pressure. As Benjamin Franklin said: “Change is the only constant in life. One’s ability to adapt to those changes will determine your success in life.”
Where do you live and what is special about it?
I live in Ballito, a beautiful coastal town on the North Coast of South Africa. It is a place where natural beauty meets community spirit, often enjoyed alongside good food, good friends and a strong sense of connection.
What do you do in your leisure time?
I enjoy being outdoors, whether on the padel court or exploring nature with my family.
How can we utilise a proactive approach to achieving a sustainable and healthy workforce?
A proactive approach begins with prevention rather than reaction. By focusing on early screening, wellness initiatives and education, we can identify potential health concerns before they escalate. For crew, this means ensuring they are fit and supported both physically and mentally before embarking, as well as providing ongoing programmes to sustain their wellbeing at sea. For guests, it means clear pre-travel guidance and support to make their journey safe and enjoyable. Ultimately, a sustainable and healthy workforce is built on consistent care, open communication and a culture that prioritises people as much as operations.
