VIKAND has been nominated for the 2023 Safety4Sea Initiative Award, which aims to reward any organization that sparked, realized, or significantly contributed to any initiative fostering safety and sustainable shipping.

As a leading provider of proactive healthcare services at sea, as well as a global advocate for sustainable seafaring, VIKAND is working to build a better future for both maritime workers and operators.

One of VIKAND’s goal is to help the industry escape the reactive health care paradigm. Experience and research have shown that a more proactive “crew asset management” approach – keeping crew healthy rather than only treating them when they’re ill – could lower risk, drive down costs and help make maritime careers more desirable.

The hardworking men and women who make our industry possible require care, protection and investment to perform their best day after day. All those reactive dollars could be better spent on proactive programs and policies designed to keep maritime workers healthy, happy and safe.

OneHealth by VIKAND is our latest crew welfare initiative – a holistic solution designed to improve both physical and mental health and the onboard environment.

First, every ship is connected with a dedicated shoreside medical professional with real maritime experience. Each month, this person connects with vessel command through face-to-face video chat to review topics such as crew health and wellness, illness and injury rates, environmental concerns, medication and medical supplies, training needs and more.

Beyond this, the shoreside medical team is available for video consultations with every crew member. Over time, they develop a relationship with the crew built on trust, familiarity and continuity, so they can better serve their individual needs.

OneHealth by VIKAND can also improve the onboard environment with solutions like air purifiers, bio-lighting, wearable sleep monitoring, and exercise and nutrition guidance. Healthier vessel environments that prioritise nutrition, clean air, sleep and exercise are proven to have a positive impact on physical and mental fitness, as well as crew performance. A fitter crew is less prone to errors, accidents and injuries, which means fewer medical claims and – over time – healthier P&Ls.

The winners of each category will be determined by the best ranking submission from an online public vote (50%) and industry panel of experts (50%). Awards will be presented to winners at a dedicated event on Wednesday 18th October 2023.
