From Neonatology to an Onboard Physician, Meet Dr. Eleonora Ivanova

Growing up in Ukraine, Dr. Eleonora Ivanova didn’t yet carry the title of medical doctor, but there were plenty of clues about what direction her career might take.

Her father was the chief surgeon for the Ukrainian Army, and his passion and enthusiasm for the medical profession made a strong impression on his young daughter. The care he provided to wounded soldiers and the pride it inspired for the Ivanova family were key factors in her decision to follow him into the field of medicine. More specifically, she wanted to help save children’s lives.

In 1986, Dr. Ivanova graduated from the Faculty of Pediatrics at the National Pirogov Memorial Medical University in Vinnytsia, central Ukraine. She then began work as a neonatologist, helping to save the lives of newborns in the maternity ward.

“I loved my work,” says Dr. Ivanova. “Preserving children's lives was a great responsibility, but it brought me the same sense of happiness as motherhood itself.”

In the early 2000s, she came across a unique opportunity to work as a doctor in a passenger fleet. Feeling spontaneous and looking for change, she seized on it. Although far from the pressures of the maternity ward, working as an onboard doctor was stimulating and rewarding in its own unique ways.

“You have to apply your knowledge and deal with unforeseen situations,” she explains. “This shared experience with colleagues brings real joy and satisfaction.”

Two years ago, Dr. Ivanova joined VIKAND – which she enthusiastically describes as “prestigious” – and now serves as a physician on cruise ships.

“I can say with pleasure that the VIKAND team is well organized and always responds quickly and helps with any issues,” says Dr. Ivanova. “I would advise anyone who wants to change their life and try something new to apply and join.”

Today, she sails the oceans caring for passengers and crew members while friends and family back home in Ukraine face an uncertain future – a situation that weighs heavily on her heart. In spite of this, every day that Dr. Ivanova carries on her father’s legacy as a physician, a piece of home follows wherever she goes.
