What Can You Expect Before Embarkation?

Now you may be wondering, what you can expect when working onboard as a physician, nurse, or paramedic. Here are some top questions that we’ve been asked by candidates during the interview process.

1. Can I choose the cruise line and/or itinerary? Usually, ship assignments depend on available positions and client's needs, but if you are interested in working for a particular cruise line and/or itinerary, we will do our best to accommodate.

2. How long will I be at sea? Working at sea requires being away from home for months at a time. You can generally expect to be away from home for three to four months.

3. How many hours will I work each day, and how many days off will I have? Medical staff is expected to be available 24 hours, seven days a week, for any emergency calls aboard. However, there will be some free time outside the established medical facility schedule and hours.

4. What perks are included when I join a cruise ship? Working onboard provides you with the opportunity for expense-free travel, including free room and board, all while increasing your savings. Also, you’ll get to experience a unique working environment, gain exposure to various cultures, meet new people, and improve your skills.

5. How can I communicate with friends and family while onboard? The best way to communicate at sea is through the Internet and social media, such as WhatsApp and Zoom. Wi-Fi onboard is available for a fee; most ports offer free Wi-Fi in its terminals. 

6. What documents and certifications do I need to work at sea? That depends on where the ship sails. For ships sailing in U.S. waters, you will need a valid U.S. work permit, a state or nationally recognized nurse or paramedic license, and BLS and ALS certifications. For ships sailing in international waters, you will need a valid passport, relevant visas, valid medical/nurse license, STCW certifications, as well as ALS or ACLS certification.
